What is the right keyword density?

Creating content for the search engines is an important aspect of SEO. In order to bait the search engine crawlers, your content should offer relevant information and have the proper density of keywords. However, stuffing your content with excessive keywords would make it being marked as a spam by Google and other search engines. So, the big question arises-what is the right keyword density?

Though there are no strict parameters to decide what is the correct keyword density, certain factors help to make a decision. In fact, keyword density is just a segment of the entire SEO package. For a good SEO technique, there are some other factors too that need to be considered to yield the desired results. Due to this, you cannot derive a magical keyword density formula that will help you to decide how much is too much for the copy of your content.

Many people, including SEO professionals and forum moderators, believe that the keyword density should be kept under 10 percent.  For some others, the average keyword density needs to be between 3 to 7 for every 100 words. The objective should be the creation of a free flowing content that uses the keywords naturally. Google and other search engines are getting smarter and you will be treated negatively if your language doesn’t sound natural. There is no set standard with which to adhere to when it comes to creating search engine-friendly text.

Though there is no standard regarding the keyword density, there is a limit where the search engines will mark your text a spam if you use too many keywords. The trick lies in finding what is considered as spam. Before going further into deciding what can be marked a spam, you need to remember that every keyword is different. One word may do well with a keyword density of just 3 percent (to get a page rank, say 4) while another may need the average density to be 6 percent. If you use the 6 percent keyword density the same way as that of the 3 percent one, you would be going dangerously close to the border of spamming.

So, keeping these factors in mind, create your content. Select those words as keywords that are popular (when people search for products or services offered by you) but have low competition. Remember to keep the flow of natural language in your text and don't compromise it for the sake of search engines.
