Web design-points to remember
When you design your web site, it will be wise to keep the following points in mind:
Fonts
- Use standard font families: It is always wise to stick to standard fonts like Verdana, Times New Roman and Arial. Though this limits the chances of experimentation with fonts and may seem boring at times, the designs and content of your web pages will look better and have a uniform appearance on more browsers.
- Limited use of varied fonts: To provide your web site a professional look, you need to use only 2 or 3 standard font families that are easy to read. Changing your font often after a few pages is not a good thing to do and makes your web site look amateurish.
Advertising
- Keep limited ads on the site: It’s quite tempting to be greedy and overwhelm your readers by putting several ads on your web page. Remember that visitors to your site don’t come to read the ads. Rather, it is your site’s content that brings readers. Of course, there is nothing wrong in the desire to make money from your web site but if you drive your visitors away, you will be the loser in the long run.
- Correct treatment of ads: Put relevant ads on your site. Your readers will be tempted to click on the ads only if they match the tone of your web site’s content. It is also a good idea to keep your ad-images small and avoid the use of blinking/flashing techniques in them.
Remember Your Readers
- Check your web pages: Always test your web pages on multiple browsers, especially those that your target audience will most likely use. If your web page does not work on different browsers, fix the errors or else, you will annoy your potential customers.
- User-friendly navigation: Keep the navigation of your site user friendly and post important data at a place that is easy to find. If your readers don’t find what they are looking for quickly or face difficulty in browsing through your pages, chances are high that they won’t think twice before hopping onto another site.
- Relevant content: Remember that the content for your site is written for your users and not for yourself. So, offer them something that interests them and offers a solution to what they are seeking. Your readers will keep coming back if they find something useful in your site.
