Importance of link building for SEO
To get good ranking in the SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Pages) for your web site, it is important to have quality backlinks in good quantity. To begin with, backlinks are links on other sites that point to your web site. Backlinks are also known as Inlinks, InBound Links (IBLs), Incoming links, and “links from other sites”. Backlinks are important for your web site as several search engines (including Google) give this factor a major importance for ranking web sites.
Here are some factors related to backlinks that you need to consider while building links:
- Quantity of Links: The more inlinks a web site has, the more important it is considered to be. Google assumes the importance of sites in this manner and such sites with a big volume of baclinks are usually ranked higher.
- Quality of Links: The quality of sites linking to you matter a lot, even more than the volume of backlinks. If a high ranked site links to you, it is taken as a vote given by that site in your favor. In other words, some “link juice” of that quality site is passed over to you.
- Relevance of the host site: Your backlinks should come from sites related to your niche. Say, web site X has content related to subject “A”. When web site X links to web site Y, then Google will assume that some content related to subject “A” exists on web site Y. If Google gives a high rating to site X and X links to site Y, Goggle will assume web site Y to be important too. This will get reflected in the rankings of web site Y.
- Relevance of the links: The anchor tag determines the relevance of incoming links. So, it is advisable to use your targeted keywords in the text of your backlink. Say, site X has a link pointing to site Y. When Google follows the link, it considers that the site Y has some matter related to the words in the text of the link. So, if the anchor tag is “Website Design Company”, Google will logically assume that web site Y has something related to web design. If site Y uses this anchor tag at several places, it will eventually be ranked higher for this particular keyword “Website Design Company” as a big volume of inlinks will contain that keyword.
In brief, you should try to get incoming links for you site from high-ranking web sites that offer products/services related to your niche. Remember to use those targeted keywords in the anchor tag of such links for which you want to get good rank in the SERPs.
