How to find a great keyword

Targeting the proper keywords for your web site or blog form the initial step of your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. So, you need to analyze them with utmost care.
  • Step1: Make a list of the words/phrases that you feel people may use to find your products/services.
  • Step 2: Use the Google keyword analysis tool to see if people use any of these words/phrases. If yes, list them according to popularity. If not, make a separate list of related keywords that boast of good search volume.
  • Step 3: List some keywords that are common (and relevant to your products/services on offer) but don’t have much competition.
  • Step 4: Create your content having proper density of the keywords listed under Step 2 and Step 3.

Let us now understand why and how the aforementioned steps will help someone to find the proper keywords. Once you have performed Step1 of listing some words/phrases that are relevant to your online business, you need to analyze the same (Step 2). This analysis will help you to know the overall popularity of these words in a Google keyword search. In case you find that nobody uses these keywords or phrases, it will be futile to use them in your content. If you repeat such word even 30 times in your content-copy, it will not serve any purpose as no one will search for your products/services using those specific keywords in the search engines like Google, Yahoo! or MSN.

You also need to choose your keywords intelligently if you need to rank in the search engines for them. Targeting very popular keywords will mean tough competition to become visible in the first page of the search results. It doesn’t mean that you should totally shun these extremely popular keywords. Rather, you need to focus more on the words/phrases that are specific to your niche and don’t have cut-throat competition (Step 3). The best option is to use both these types of keywords keeping the ratio tilted in favor of the latter category. In fact, the use of specific keyword phrases that describe the value and content of your site or blog in specific terms is a great way to bring targeted traffic to your web pages. Even if these phrases are not extremely popular with respect to the search volumes, you need not worry, as only serious people looking for what you have to offer will land at your site/blog.

As the final step (Step 4), you need to create compelling content that uses the keywords already listed by you. Your content should be enticing enough to urge the readers to act (like purchasing your products, ordering for your services or signing up for the newsletter etc). Remember to steer clear of stuffing your content with keywords. Don’t compromise on the free flow of your copy. However, while making the content reader friendly, try to weave the keywords at appropriate places. Creating fresh content that is interesting and has proper keyword density may take time. Nevertheless, it’s worth the wait as you will benefit in the log run by getting ranked in the search engines for your targeted keywords.
